Vacuum Solo

History

Jonathan Fishman has played his Electrolux vacuum cleaner at many a Phish show over the years, sucking and blowing his way through “I Didn’t Know,” “Love You,” “Terrapin,” “If I  Only Had a Brain,”  “Bike,” “The Great Gig in the Sky,” and “Purple Rain, ” among others, over the years. But he has performed precious few true vacuum solos over the years. However, on eight occasions, Hankrietta – the hardest man in show business – has taken center stage to give the audience what they paid their hard earned money to see: 100% pure, uncut vacuum cleaner music, played by a little hairy beast man in a donut muumuu. Usually, these would unfold in the same manner: the band would stop on a dime mid-song; Friar Tubbs would saunter to the front of the stage with his Electrolux and perform his solo with a lone white spotlight upon him, and, finally, he would return to his drums whereupon the band would resume playing as if the whole dastardly deed had never happened.
