This was my second show since fall 2000 (saw Charlotte this past summer) and the first show I have had phish come to me, in the city where I live. Of course, nothing spectacular was expected of this show, but they sounded tight throughout, and this is a good sign for those of you with tickets for the fall. DWD got the crowd going and reinforced itself as the classic tour opener. I wondered if they would play Cities since it was ACL and Austin is a music lover's paradise, but the Talking Heads cover ended quickly, bringing me back down to Earth after imagining a Berkeley-esque jam in Zilker Park. Possum, Wolfman's, Chalkdust was simply the boys rocking out songs they've perfected and which sound so crisp in 2010. Rock 'n Roll was the longest jam of the evening at around ten minutes and segued into 2001, which, although still a barn burner, doesn't compare with the longer more exploratory versions of the late 1990s. The Hood jam, before peaking, turned into Light. I thought a jam would come out of this song and hopefully return to Hood, but even the jammed out Light of summer 2000 didn't get some improv last night. Suzy had a nice Page solo, but the highlight of the night for me was the YEM, as I knew they would play this classic song for a diverse audience. The crowd was gettin' down and the jam ended with Mike giving a funky solo. Cavern was a great first song for the encore, and First Tube melted us all down before a walk to downtown where the party continued.

Overall, nothing special here, but a nice night, with a good crowd, and a spectacular setting - Zilker Park with the city skyline in the background. Phish is back and playing as tight as ever. We're in for a treat this fall.
