And since we're entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we've distributed over $2 million to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
I appreciate everyone's sentiments, and entirely understand why many of you believed that I was being negative. However, whether you believe me or not, I should say that I expressed and felt no negativity whatsoever to any other phan at SuperBall, and that I would never bash any fan. Let me explain.
This was an essay, and I took some serious liberties in order to make it read better and have more drama. In reality, all I was thinking as I walked through the crowd during that song was to look for other fans with whom to share my joy, and I found many, many of them. I also saw many who were not going nuts for Forbin's, but that is perfectly fine, as I would never criticize anyone for how they enjoy a show. I never thought any negative thoughts about a single person. Most of the characters that I did paint negatively in my essay are made up caricatures.
Anyone who knows me will let you know that I love Phish and, especially, love Phish fans. This essay took liberties with a fictional internal monologue that reflected a momentary passing thought that floated through my brain, and amplified the "negative" aspects. If you don't want to believe me, that's fine. I understand how the character in my essay ("me" could come off as a self-righteous, pretentious asshole. But that's not me.
As for why I was walking around during Forbin's - I had a photo pass and was in the pit in front of the stage for the first 15 minutes of the set, after which I went back to meet my crew. When Forbin's started, I could either miss sharing the entire experience with my closest friends and my wife, or I could book it back to rage it with them. I chose the latter .
Anyway, thanks to everyone who voted for my essay and to everyone else who read.
