MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 225

Welcome to the 225th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday. I've posted NINE clips this week -- these nine clips share something in common. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of each of the nine mystery jam clips, and answer what the nine clips share in common. Each person gets one guess per day, with the second “day” starting after I post the hint -- each guess should contain nine songs / dates, and a guess at the commonality. No sharing or trading of answers is allowed. A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, with the answer to follow on Wednesday. The winner will receive an MP3 code good for a free download of any show, courtesy of our friends atLivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. Good luck!

Note: Some (iOS) users may notice that the audio skips back to the first clip only halfway in, looping indefinitely. If that's the case, you can listen here.

Hint:

Answer: Congrats to @TwiceBitten, now @TwiceAnMJMWinner, who correctly identified the 5/7/94 Dog Log (Soundcheck), 6/16/95 Runaway Jim, 9/2/87 Shaggy Dog, 7/12/03 Dogs Stole Things, 5/3/85 McGrupp (PhishTracks and Phish.in' have a track labeled "Whipping Post -> McGrupp", but it only contains Whipping Post), 8/21/15 The Dogs, 7/23/88 No Dogs Allowed, 8/21/87 Harpua, and 12/2/97 Dog Faced Boy, as well as the canine theme that connects them all. I must say I'm really pleased with so many folks taking a crack at this week's crazy MJM, so I'm curious to see how folks do next week when we'll be back with our now typical 3 clip + theme format for MJM226: Holiday Edition.

Lee_Fordham Cool, only 9 tunes this week ...

PearlJamMusic Oddly, I have an idea as to what the theme may be, but no idea where to start listening in order to prove my thesis.

Actually, I do know one of the jams, but I'm guessing it's the easiest of the bunch.

I got roped into going to a show tonight, so I won't be able to devote any time to this until late tonight or even tomorrow. I'll definitely take a crack at it though if you sleuths haven't solved it before I get a chance to dig in. Good luck everybody!

MikeG 7/9 but absolutely stumped on one of them.

runlikecarini can we share which number clips we've gotten? I won't yet but I have six now and it's be interesting to see if some of us are struggling with the same ones
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer Sure, share whatever information you want as long it's not any part of the answer. But in doing so now instead of after it's been solved, I'm not sure what you're hoping to actually get out of it, as that would encourage trading of answers which is definitely not allowed.
, comment by runlikecarini
runlikecarini True, I guess being at 6/9 I'm just really curious to know which ones MikeG and CDTeacher are stuck on

Judging by that hint (one that's missing audio), I bet we are.

I spent a little time listening last night after the show, and once I had the theme the answers started coming pretty fast. But I was too tired and had to go to bed after finding only five of them.

I agree that it would be interesting to know if we've all found the same ones. I feel like I found the five easiest ones, so I'm guessing yes. It's tempting to share which clip numbers we've found, but Pete's probably right...that could easily lead to answer trading. I'd be happy to compare notes after it's over though.

WayIFeel I got 4/9 last night and haven't had a minute today to even try to figure the rest out. I'll give it a go tonight. Good luck all.

Exactly. Anyone who's gotten all but two is almost assuredly missing the two alluded to by Snoop. And there's one thing I don't think anyone has realized about today's hint...

first I started listening to every show marijuana has been smoked at. You can imagine how far I got with that....

second I started searching for every show(s) in Long Beach.

third and most importantly, I discovered the hint clearly wants us to check out every show when Cactus wore a scarf!

1. Dog Log (5/7/94) - soundcheck
2. Runaway Jim (6/16/95)
3 - Shaggy Dog 9/2/87

5 - McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters (5/3/85) - not on phishtracks

7- No Dogs Allowed 8/04/88
8- Harpua 8/21/87
9 -Dog Face Boy 12/2/97

Regardless this week was fun. Thanks ucpete!!!
, comment by runlikecarini
runlikecarini ^^ yeah i guess i was wrong with my no dogs allowed date. oh well. I was having trouble with 2, 5 and 9. I failed to ID the runaway jim but i knew it was a runaway jim. Also think I listened to that mgcrupp and didnt hear the clip. Also knew the last one was a fastish dog face boy but had no idea where to start looking for that. Not that anyone cares about this but this was the closest I've come on my own to one of these so I can't wait for next week!
, comment by schvice
schvice I realized that last post could potentially have been a game-ruining spoiler....so I went ahead and confirmed the rest:

2. 6/16/95 Runaway Jim

5. 5/3/85 McGrupp (segment starts at 7:32)

8. 8/21/87 Harpua

Nice MJM, @ucpete! Great win, @TwiceBitten!

WayIFeel Nice win @twicebitten!
It was funny I was looking for the first jam and stumbled into the 9th jam, Dog Face Boy. Then eventually I realized The Dogs jam and it was on. I started listening to a bunch of those mid 90's Runaway Jim's too for the 2nd jam and was saying to myself @uctweezer wouldn't torture us with one of those 20min plus Jims. Nope! He went for the 30min Jim. That's just cruel!
Awesome MJM! Gonna be tough to check in next week on Memorial Day.

D'oh! I even hovered the cursor over the picture to see the url, but I assumed pastebin was just a photo hosting site.

runlikecarini You said you had 7/9 and both from the hint but were missing two. next post you solved it.... Would you mind sharing your thought process from that point or at least which two you struggling with. Just curious, and congrats on the well deserved win!

cerqs I had trouble with #1
, comment by HeyCrutch
HeyCrutch this was a lot of fun! First time I've really tried a MMJ.

For me, the first one I nailed was The Dogs, then I got Dogs Stole Things.

At first I thought No Dogs Allowed was Divided Sky (which is it in a way) so I thought they were all songs that start with the letter D. That led me astray for a while. Then I got Shaggy Dog and new it had to be Dogs related so I solve the No Dogs Allowed. Figured their had to be a Dog Faced Boy in there somewhere but couldn't find it. Thought about Harpua but didn't think it would be possible to find it. McGrupp and Runaway Jim ... I wasn't smart enough to think about those two. doh!
, comment by dbertsch
dbertsch I was also still missing 2 and 8. Imagine what could have been accomplished with the collective man-hours that likely went into this puzzle!
, comment by TwiceBitten
TwiceBitten @runlikecarini asked "Would you mind sharing your thought process"

I knew the song right away for #3, #4, #6, #7 & #9. So I focused on what I thought were the harder ones first, thinking if I can get these then I'll spend the time listening to 50 versions of Dogs Stole Things. I knew the soundcheck tune must have been Dog Log...used youtube to find that. I honestly lucked out because I knew that the 5/3/85 McGrupp wasn't on phishtracks. Also I could hear that it had two guitars and keys faintly in the background, so there weren't really a lot of options for what this could be (this is actually Page's first show by the way). It's on the jam chart in yellow and I remember having to download the show in order to hear it. Where I bet a lot of people ran into trouble is the confusion around it being listed but not actually available. If you search songs for McGrupp it doesn't show up because the preceding 18 minute jam is labeled Whipping Post > McGrupp but it cuts just as McGrupp starts. I think I actually even wrote to phishtracks guy a few years ago but he never corrected this. So yeah I found this before I saw the pastebin hint (which I did eventually find). I imagine this is the one that was really hard for people, so once I got that one I put in the work to get the rest. The jamming chart helped me get the version of Dog Faced Boy, but for #3, 4, 6 and 7 I just had to listen to every version until I found the proper clip. The hardest two for me were #2 6/16/95 Jim and #8 8/21/87 Harpua. I knew those had to be the tunes I was searching for because I was running low on dog songs. It's just that #2 could have come from any jam and #8 didn't sound like Harpua. I actually tried listening to a bunch of ambient pieces from Harpuas for #2 (thought for a second it was the end of the Clifford Ball version) before I decided to switch tactics and check out long versions of Jim. There were no drums in that clip so it was pretty easy to find starting at the end of all the major versions and scanning through backwards. Once I got that, I knew Harpua was the last song I needed, so I started from the first version on phishtracks, and hey guess what? Ian's Farm is the first recorded version available on the site. Voila!

You probably didn't need all that info, but there it is!
, comment by TwiceBitten
TwiceBitten Oh one thing to add for @uctweezer, the hint was actually somewhat misleading because two of the jams are not on phishtracks, had to go to youtube for this one. phishtracks doesn't even have the first set of the Bomb Factory, though phish.in does, and neither have the soundcheck.

, comment by runlikecarini
runlikecarini Thank you Twicebitten! I was definitely thrown off by the Mcgrupp. I heard two guitars in that clip as well so I knew it was early. Plus the clip was from the jam section towards the end that they ended up making more into a composed section not too long after the debut. But I listened to that whipping post > mcgrupp like five times wondering where the hell the mcgrupp started. Never downloaded the show though so that was my problem. And I never would've found that Jim. Ever
